| South, as the old cliche goes, finds it's strength in it's diversity. Presently based in Kankakee, Illinois, Their story began in the small town of Clifton, Illinois on the fringe of the Chicago southlands. A group of friends active in various music programs began replacing their traditional concert instruments with used guitars and beat-up drum sets and jammed whenever they could in garages, barns and empty rehearsal rooms of the modest Central High School. By January , , after a number of differing arrangements, South officially formed. The band borrowed it's name from Otto Road in Kankakee County where four of the five original members resided. Currently, the band is composed of Lee Dean (lead guitar, vocals), Ryan Leggott (bass, vocals), Garth Johnson (drums), Greg Peerbolte (rhythm guitar, vocals), Robert "Da Vinci" Gates (keys, aux. perc., vocals), and Donny Elumbaugh (Live sound, recording engineer, webmaster).
Dean is a natural musician, fluent in guitar, bass, drums, keys and virtually any other instrument he picks up. He has been playing self-taught guitar for several years. Previously, he was active in gospel and jazz bands. Leggott has been playing playing bass guitar for well over a decade and was original member of the acclaimed band Key Lo G (previously Mystery Machine). He is extremely influenced by funk music and is a crowd favorite on stage. Johnson has been playing drums for virtually all his life. He has been involved in countless bands in almost every genre, including the notorious Rat Bastard Band of Kankakee. Peerbolte has been playing guitar for upwards of seven years. He is an intense and heated performer with lavish stage presence. His influences include the dynamic classic rock of the 's and 's. Gates, who moonlights as a nationally ranked tennis player, is truly deserving of his nickname. He has composed numerous pieces of music, ranging in style from hip-hop and blues to R&B and instrumental jazz. He is influenced by aspects of all genres of music. Elumbaugh, the literal and figurative " th man" of South's appearance and success on the web.
South is a seasoned act that has played across Chicagoland and throughout Central Illinois. The band has successfully participated in concerts, private venues, battle of the bands, and has fans ranging in age from to . They are influenced by virtually every genre of music, and their original compositions reflect elements of funk, hard rock, blues, jazz, ballads, and R&B. | HI WE ARE THE BAND RED BLACK VAIL FROM THE CITY CHICAGO. IN THE YEAR OF THREE FRIENDS HAD A IDEA TO MAKE A BAND TWO OF THOSE FRIENDS DID, AND IT BECAME BIGGER THAN WE COULD IMAGIN. PLAYING AT HOUSE PARTIES, STAGE DIVING INTO A CROWD, FEELING HOW IT FEEL TO SEE PEOPLE SING AND PLAYING OUR MUSIC. WE DIDN'T MAKE A BAND FOR MONEY, WE MADE A BAND BECAUSE WE LOVED HOW IT FELT TO GO ON STAGE AND HEAR PEOPLE SCREAMING OUR NAME OR PEOPLE GETTING HAPPY JUST TO MEET US. THE BAND NAME RED BLACK VAIL THE BIGGEST QUESTION WE GET, WHAT DOES IT MEAN, RED THE COLOR OF LOVE, BLACK THE COLOR OF HATE AND PAIN, AND THE VAIL TO COVER IT UP SO NO ONE CAN SEE THE PAIN YOU FEEL.WE DIDN'T START OFF VERY WELL THE GUITAR PLAYER STARTED OFF WITH A VERY SMALL MARSHALL AMP AND A OLD MESSED UP GUITAR THAT DIDN'T WORK VERY GOOD, AND THE DRUMMER HE HAD A FACTORY MADE DRUM SET THAT WAS CRAP, BUT WERE LIVING PROOF IF YOU WORK HARD ENOUGHT AND PRACTICE SHI'S THE LIMIT. NOW WE PLAY FOR LOTS OF PEOPLE, WE HAVE GUITARS THAT PEOPLE WOULD ONLY DREAM OF, AND STACK AND STACKS OF AMPS. THE DRUMS NOW HE HAS A FULL RACK SYSTEM WITH EVERY THING HE WANTS. WE DID IT SO CAN YOU. WITH WORK YOU CAN DO ANYTHING. WELL AS YOU READ YOU CAN SEE THAT WE ONLY TALK ABOUT TWO PEOPLE KNOW WE HAVE A NEW BASSIST. |
