South, as the old cliche goes, finds it's strength in it's diversity. Presently based in Kankakee, Illinois, Their story began in the small town of Clifton, Illinois on the fringe of the Chicago southlands. A group of friends active in various music programs began replacing their traditional concert instruments with used guitars and beat-up drum sets and jammed whenever they could in garages, barns and empty rehearsal rooms of the modest Central High School. By January , , after a number of differing arrangements, South officially formed. The band borrowed it's name from Otto Road in Kankakee County where four of the five original members resided. Currently, the band is composed of Lee Dean (lead guitar, vocals), Ryan Leggott (bass, vocals), Garth Johnson (drums), Greg Peerbolte (rhythm guitar, vocals), Robert "Da Vinci" Gates (keys, aux. perc., vocals), and Donny Elumbaugh (Live sound, recording engineer, webmaster).
Dean is a natural musician, fluent in guitar, bass, drums, keys and virtually any other instrument he picks up. He has been playing self-taught guitar for several years. Previously, he was active in gospel and jazz bands. Leggott has been playing playing bass guitar for well over a decade and was original member of the acclaimed band Key Lo G (previously Mystery Machine). He is extremely influenced by funk music and is a crowd favorite on stage. Johnson has been playing drums for virtually all his life. He has been involved in countless bands in almost every genre, including the notorious Rat Bastard Band of Kankakee. Peerbolte has been playing guitar for upwards of seven years. He is an intense and heated performer with lavish stage presence. His influences include the dynamic classic rock of the 's and 's. Gates, who moonlights as a nationally ranked tennis player, is truly deserving of his nickname. He has composed numerous pieces of music, ranging in style from hip-hop and blues to R&B and instrumental jazz. He is influenced by aspects of all genres of music. Elumbaugh, the literal and figurative " th man" of South's appearance and success on the web.
South is a seasoned act that has played across Chicagoland and throughout Central Illinois. After beating out , hopefuls to become a semi-finalist on FOX's Hit show AMERICAN IDOL, year old singer/songwriter/dancer/actor Jared Michael Yates is well on his way.
During season of the world's most popular televised talent competition, Jared wowed the crowd with his charm and incredible natural talent.
"I auditioned for American Idol as a spur of the moment thing" recalled the Illinois native, who soon found himself performing live in front of over million television viewers. As the youngest male performer of the season, Jared was interviewed and featured on MTV News, ACCESS HOLLYWOOD, E Tonight, and numerous other media outlets. Statistics on Google in late showed Jared Yates, along with grammy winner Carrie Underwood, as among the most 'searched' Idol contestants on the net.
In addition to performing at numerous shows, fairs, festivals, and concerts, Jared found that he has an inherent ability to write songs as well. Jared's new CD "ALL THAT I AM", is currently being shopped to major labels. "A lot of people, especially teenagers, will be able to relate to the message of my music since I am in their age range.
Jared now travels and performs for many gigs and bookings with his new band of very talented musicians.

Harvey Fuqua of Motown Hitsville, U.S.A owned a record label, Anna Records and Harvey’s label’s artist Johnny Bristol, brought a band to Harvey's attention: “Jr. Walker and The All Stars” with Tony Washington on drums, Autrey DeWalt (aka) Jr. Walker on sax and vocals, Victor Thomas on keyboards and Willie Woods on guitar.
Harvey Fuqua signed the band to his label in 1963; he closed his label and Harvey Fuqua brought his artists including the band with him to Motown Records. They started recording in 1964. Harvey became a songwriter and executive at Motown.
The 90's sadly brought the untimely death of Autrey DeWalt (aka) Jr. Walker and Willie Woods. Since then, Victor Thomas and Tony Washington have united with Kenny Walker on sax and Acklee King on percussion.
Throughout the 48 years of making music this band has worked side by side with Harvey Fuqua and in 2002 was inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame.
