"Better Than Work" is a Pittsburgh based orginal band that began when saxophonist Jake Werkmeister and guitarist/singer/songwriter Mike Plutt decided to put a band together during the winter of . Through a mutual friend they met fluatist/composer Gabe Antkowski, who originally auditioned to play the bass. Jake then went to search for a drummer. After auditioning drummers throughout the city, some of whom sent tapes in from out of state, Jake found Jeff Martin. Jeff's jazz/rock style and love for Mitch Mitchell and John Bonham was exactly what the newly formed band was looking for. So the quartet practiced together for several months, and songs were being written, but something seemed to be missing. Gabe and Jake would take turns playing bass while the other played their respective woodwind. Then almost by accident, the two began to trade riffs and work with harmonized horn parts. BINGO!!! The sax/flute duet created the unique texture that the band was looking for. Now, there was just one problem. Who was going to play bass? Andy Dzura who was an old friend/drummer of Jake's would quickly solve the problem. He introduced the band to the funky bassline stylings of Ryan Suley, who instantly fit the band like a glove. Now the band is getting ready to record their first SELF PRODUCED ALBUM. They have already begun to play gigs and are working along with several other bands to create a new music scene in Pittsburgh that will no doubt turn some heads. We'll be sure to keep you up to date. But for right now it's all about... Bad Pay, No Roadies, and No Groupies, but it's still BETTER THAN WORK!!!

This was our first album and this being a learning process, there are some things we may have done differently and some things we are pretty proud of. For a band (in its current formation) that has only been together for a short time, actually putting out an album was a huge step. There is often a misconception on what it takes to be a successful band. Getting together to create and play music is the easiest part. You’re doing what you love. When you have musicians as talented as we do, you often come up with some great stuff. The difficult parts are battling addictions, egos, incarcerations, girl problems, low times, slow times, over looking the general negative bull shit and just trying to stay together.
That being said, after all the struggles, this is our Album Lessons. "If they were easy they'd be forgotten." We were on a limited budget so we couldn't really waste time in the studio recording every song. Instead, we decided to choose songs which would highlight all of our influences. The result was an album with a mixture of styles including Rock, Reggae, Drum & Bass, Funk, Acid Jazz, Ska, Punk, Hip Hop, Go-Go, Jungle, Trip Hop and probably some other stuff. We felt each song gives a glimpse of us as a group. That’s the Big Hurt. 6 different individuals with many different personalities that have remained together long enough to put out an album. Only the future can tell what's next...........
