| Pittsburgh based outfit, The Metropolitans, are a -piece Swing Pop band with a sharp sound reminiscent of the bustling, cool nights in the skyscraping city. Their sound is carefully drawn from elements of soulful rock, standard jazz and swing. Featuring a -part horn section to compliment the driving melodies of the original songs, The Metropolitans offer a truly extraordinary sound that is unrivaled on the local music stage. At the forefront of their on-stage entourage stands a feminine voice resounding with modern and impassioned nostalgia – a voice that is upheld by the constant and complicated movement of the rhythm section. The Metropolitans possess the spirit of a lost era fused with the contemporary sound of the fast-paced culture in which we all live.
A Brief History
The Metropolitans was formed in September after a conversation held between two friends. One of them, Seth Dubin, an experienced songwriter, guitarist and bandleader of projects such as Artificial Lingo, Cazart and Brown Derby Junction, presented the idea of starting a modern swing band. The other, Rocco Pacella, a trumpet player, offered his musical ability and support to the idea. The two high-fived immediately, and thusly, The Metropolitans were formed and the search began for talented musicians.
Auditions were held until the band found tenor saxophonist Jonny Franks and alto saxophonist Jason Munley, both of whom possessed significant experience as jazz-based musicians. The two complimented Rocco’s prominent tone and Seth’s original melodies, creating powerful harmonies and setting the band’s unique sound.
James Kurasch, a previous band mate of Seth’s, was an obvious choice to play bass, and accepted the project without hesitation. His skill and knowledge of music added to the already accomplished experience of the band’s members. Drummer John Cafaro joined the band as the most recent addition, bringing completion and his own explosive style of playing to the rhythm section.
The right voice was hard to find. Eventually, after many rounds of auditions, Elise Smithmyer was asked to join. Elise was a natural talent, and immediately filled the void with a sultry voice and confident demeanor.
The Metropolitans are without a doubt the unrivaled culmination of varying backgrounds, techniques and personalities. Sound, spirit and style come together to create this distinctive and crowd-pleasing Swing Pop outfit. |

| "Better Than Work" is a Pittsburgh based orginal band that began when saxophonist Jake Werkmeister and guitarist/singer/songwriter Mike Plutt decided to put a band together during the winter of . Through a mutual friend they met fluatist/composer Gabe Antkowski, who originally auditioned to play the bass. Jake then went to search for a drummer. After auditioning drummers throughout the city, some of whom sent tapes in from out of state, Jake found Jeff Martin. Jeff's jazz/rock style and love for Mitch Mitchell and John Bonham was exactly what the newly formed band was looking for. So the quartet practiced together for several months, and songs were being written, but something seemed to be missing. Gabe and Jake would take turns playing bass while the other played their respective woodwind. Then almost by accident, the two began to trade riffs and work with harmonized horn parts. BINGO!!! The sax/flute duet created the unique texture that the band was looking for. Now, there was just one problem. Who was going to play bass? Andy Dzura who was an old friend/drummer of Jake's would quickly solve the problem. He introduced the band to the funky bassline stylings of Ryan Suley, who instantly fit the band like a glove. Now the band is getting ready to record their first SELF PRODUCED ALBUM. They have already begun to play gigs and are working along with several other bands to create a new music scene in Pittsburgh that will no doubt turn some heads. We'll be sure to keep you up to date. But for right now it's all about... Bad Pay, No Roadies, and No Groupies, but it's still BETTER THAN WORK!!! |
